What People Are Saying about the Calendar

Just wanted to thank you for the incredible calendar and photography—I am undone! I have been looking through the whole thing and especially enjoying the written parts—I feel as though I have learned so much about the world. Kind of like being in a Cristine classroom. I would be interested in the companion book you produced—I’m sure it is just as incredible. Let me know how I can purchase a copy.    –S–

I just opened your package. It’s beautiful, and I love it so much.   –SH–

Your calendar is BEAUTIFUL!! It's a really touching compilation.  –B–

Just received Landscapes of the Mind. This is far more than a calendar !!! It’s a magnificent piece of art and education, I’m blown away. It’s beautifully displayed in the pop up housing that will be found in my living room for daily viewing. Amazing work … does this complement the book you’re working on completing ?    –CS–

We really spent time reading and looking at each image in your calendar. What a compelling piece! Can't wait to see it become the book!   –ED–

I went through your calendar page by page, reading everything. The photos are amazing and I’m so glad you included the extra info pages. I felt like I got such an education from them about places I’ve been and haven’t been to yet. You have such a way of keying in to special aspects about a place and sharing little pieces of information that say so much. I can’t wait for the books.    –T–

Landscapes of the Mind Vols. 1 & 2

Landscapes of the Mind is many things about this planet of ours - journey, pilgrimage, exploration. It is my decades of teaching Geography, my homage to the world via words and photographs, and my effort at grappling with the complexities that make up this third rock from the sun. It is ultimately my way of sharing a sense of place.

Sample Table of Contents

This is a sample Table of Contents for Landscapes of the Mind, which is currently being split into two volumes.  Certain stories/essays/poems and photos from each chapter/region will be separated into the different volumes. What that means is that parts of Africa will be in both Volume 1 and Volume 2 and the same for each existing chapter. New material incorporating recent travel is being added to what are designed as 8.5" x 11" volumes.

Through This Geographer's Eyes
This Geographer's Eyes

When I was young, Geography was a boring subject that covered little more than the capitals of the US states. If someone called Africa a country, I doubt they would have been corrected. Some schools today still don’t make the corrections that Africa is not a country, just as Europe and Asia are not countries. They are regions and continents with an array of countries within them. It stands to reason, then, that my love for Geography did not stem from my early schooling.

I was “geographying,” however, if I might make up that word, throughout my childhood, exploring land, wildlife, and people. I had a nifty rock collection where little specimens were pasted into boxes and their locations were noted. My brother and I dammed up the creek that ran down from the mountains and emptied into the Pacific Ocean at our Malibu beach house. That taught me early lessons in water flow and management. I found old arrowheads and artifacts from the early Chumash people of that area and pretended to be one of them as I hiked the hills and swam the waters. I relished the gifts my traveling grandparents and aunt brought back for me from what was generically called “The Orient” in the Fifties. And in my book, Landscapes of the Mind, I tell of the discarded black accordion file I found one day – a file containing pages torn from National Geographic, articles about peoples around the world, and maps of earthly places in addition to a chart of the solar system. I was in heaven...and became a convert of what became the field of Geography.

There are two main fields of Geography: Physical and Human. Physical geography includes areas such as geomorphology, hydrology, glaciology, oceanography, biogeography, ecology, climatology, and meteorology. Human geography includes cultural, economic, political, population geography, to name a few. I landed in Cultural Geography, but grabbed handfuls of all of the others since what I was teaching included history, politics, religion (and religious conflict), geology, ecology, economics, and more. Those are the eyes I see through, enhanced by endless travel, research, and professional work with multiple ethnic groups and in water resources management.

For me, the magic in life comes from piecing everything together in a constantly changing puzzle – testing the position of pieces, rearranging them when new information surfaces, then rearranging them again when I stand on the soil of that puzzle piece. Nothing is static in our universe or on this planet of ours, so realignment is a constant. And what motivates me the most is a love for sharing what I’ve learned. Thus… the calendar and book.
